One of the injured is in critical condition. Police said the explosion occurred around 10:00pm on Wednesday at the newly built gas refuelling station named “N Alam”. Gas started leaking at the pump from around 7:00pm. Photo: Collected Resident Medical Officer of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital Sabuktagin Mahmud Sohel said six of the injured are being treated at the hospital. “One critically injured patient has been sent to Dhaka, and eight others have been referred to Chattogram,” he said. Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Chhomi Uddin said the leakage continued for nearly three hours, allowing gas to spread across surrounding areas. “Nearly one kilometre of area was exposed to gas, creating panic among residents,” he said. The spokesperson emphasized that Beijing rejects the use or threat of force in international relations, urging all parties to contribute to regional peace in the Middle East. EPA/WU HAO The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday vowed to firmly protect the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of its companies when asked to comment on Panamanian authorities’ control of two ports on the Panama Canal from Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings (CKHH). Sanctions, Seizures, and the Limits of Maritime Visibility...

The enforcement problem has changed. Detection is no longer the constraint. Attribution is. In December 2025, a combined U.S. Coast Guard and Marine special operations team launched from the USS Gerald R. Ford to board the VLCC M/T Skipper off the coast of Venezuela, seizing 1.85 million barrels of crude. Ten days later, the M/T Centuries was taken in similar fashion, carrying another 1.8 million barrels. A third vessel, the Bella 1, fled across the North Atlantic before being seized with UK military assistance in early January 2026. These were not routine port state inspections. They were kinetic operations backed by carrier strike groups and foreign military coordination. And they required something far more demanding than a satellite ping or an AIS alert. They required evidence. This is the new reality of maritime sanctions enforcement: governments are willing to use military force, but only when the intelligence package meets an...
Global treaty on fishing vessel safety to enter into force in 2027...
posted on: Feb 26, 2026
The 2012 Cape Town Agreement has met the requirements for entry into force and will officially take effect in February 2027, closing a longstanding gap in the global maritime safety framework. Argentina became the latest country to accede to the Agreement, with Mariana Edith Plaza, Argentina’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, depositing the instrument of accession on 24 February 2026 at IMO Headquarters in London. Mariana Edith Plaza, deposited Argentina’s instrument of accession to the Cape Town Agreement. / Credit: IMO This brings the total number of Member State accessions to 28, representing 3,754 vessels of 24 metres or more in length. The Agreement enters into force 12 months after at least 22 States, collectively representing 3,600 qualifying fishing vessels—typically ocean-going ships operating on the high seas—consent to be bound by the treaty. The Cape Town Agreement sets mandatory safety standards for more than 45,000 fishing vessels of 24 metres...
The US Navy sacked a destroyer captain after a ship collision. The incident spotlighted the risks of resupplies at sea....
posted on: Feb 26, 2026
The US Navy abruptly fired the commander of guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun after his ship collided with a logistics vessel during a resupply operation at sea earlier this month. Rear Adm. Carlos Sardiello, who leads US Naval Forces Southern Command and 4th Fleet, relieved Cmdr. James Koffi on Sunday. The ship collision that resulted in a “loss of confidence” and cost Koffi his command occurred during a replenishment-at-sea operation involving USNS Supply, a fast combat support ship, the Navy said in a statement on the relief. The cause of the ship collision remains under investigation but highlights the risks of at-sea logistics and the challenges of keeping naval forces on the move. Replenishments-at-sea are resupplies in which one ship sails closely alongside another to transfer supplies such as fuel or ammunition. These missions are routine operations that support global naval activity by allowing vessels to remain at sea, rather than forcing...

France Starts Trial of Shadow Tanker Captain Charged with Disobeying Orders...
posted on: Feb 25, 2026
A French court in Brest was due to begin the trial in absentia of the Chinese captain aboard the sanctioned shadow fleet tanker Boracay. France detailed the vessel in September 2025 to investigate its registration, and they allege the captain “failed to obey” orders from the French troops sent to interdict the vessel. The tanker has been linked to shadow fleet operations dating back to 2022, and reports indicate it has made numerous trips between the Russian oil terminal at Primorsk and China. The UK sanctioned the ship in October 2024, and the EU followed in February 2025. The ship has had a shadowy history of multiple names and reported flags, which led to Estonia detaining the tanker in May 2025 when it was identifying as the Kiwala. It was claiming a registry in Djibouti, which the Estonians said could not be confirmed. Djibouti, however, said it would give the ship...
MLC twenty years on: Establishing key worker rights at sea...
posted on: Feb 25, 2026
The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are marking the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), a landmark treaty that has reshaped working and living conditions for seafarers. Adopted on 23 February 2006 by the International Maritime Labour Conference through an unprecedented tripartite consensus, the MLC Convention brought together governments, shipowners, and seafarers to establish a comprehensive global framework regulating working and living conditions in one of the world’s most international industries. This spirit of partnership has remained central to its enduring strength and continued relevance. As of 31 December 2025, MLC, 2006 had been ratified by 111 States, representing over 96.6% of global shipping tonnage. Key achievements under the MLC Convention The MLC consolidated and modernized around seventy maritime labor instruments into a single, comprehensive international framework. It established enforceable minimum standards for wages, hours of work and rest, medical...
2025 SEAFiT Crew Survey results show falling satisfaction levels and severe obstacles to shore leave...

The 2025 SEAFiT Crew Survey, covering 1.7K ships and 22K seafarers worldwide and sponsored by NorthStandard, shines a spotlight on mounting challenges at sea. Results show falling satisfaction levels, severe obstacles to shore leave, rising wellbeing concerns – especially around sleep, food, and recreation – and continued dissatisfaction with onboard connectivity Seafarers are the backbone of global shipping and the driving force behind maritime trade. As the IMO Secretary-General aptly stated, “No seafarers, no shipping, no shopping.” Ensuring a sustainable future for the industry depends on maintaining a healthy, supported, and productive workforce, making crew welfare a key priority. The year 2025 has brought numerous challenges to shipping, including ongoing conflicts in Israel, Iran, and Ukraine, as well as Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which disrupted global supply routes. Despite these obstacles, the industry quickly adapted, with seafarers – the unsung heroes – ensuring the continuous flow of raw materials, fuel, food,...
Dryad Global: Navigational hazards due to jamming and spoofing in the Gulf of Oman...
posted on: Feb 25, 2026
Dryad Global has issued an alert regarding elevated risks to commercial maritime traffic in the Gulf of Oman and Strait of Hormuz due to GPS jamming and AIS spoofing linked to ongoing Iranian military exercises and electronic warfare operations. Electronic warfare and navigation disruptions As informed, these electronic warfare activities, including signal jamming observed during IRGC Navy drills such as the “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz” (initiated around 16 February), have disrupted navigation systems, caused false positional data, and increased hazards of misidentification, near-misses, or collisions in this high-traffic chokepoint. Amplifying factors and concurrent exercises The interference aligns with historical patterns during IRGC operations and has been amplified by concurrent activities: partial temporary closures of sections of the Strait for live-fire and security drills (reported 17-18 February, causing minor delays), joint Iran-Russia naval exercises now underway in the Gulf of Oman, northern Indian Ocean, and adjacent areas...
The IMO Net Zero Framework survives; now, ambition must return...

Anaïs Rios, senior shipping policy officer at Seas At Risk, writes for Splash today on what is shaping up to be a pivotal year for shipping’s decarbonisation pathways. At the last International Maritime Organization (IMO) meeting, I sat in the plenary room, watching what felt like a telenovela. Full of twists, surprise interventions, sharp turns, and raised eyebrows. Delegates waited for the unexpected, and the week ended with a cliffhanger. At the start, we imagined that talks would focus on strengthening the Net Zero Framework (NZF). By the end of the week, hopes had been lowered to something more basic: that the framework would survive. From the back row of the plenary, I witnessed the USA, Russia and Saudi Arabia a few others, los villanos (the villains), succeeding in blocking its adoption, and in turn, blocking any progress toward reducing climate change. One year earlier, the IMO had surprised many by...
IMO Guidelines Are Quietly Weakening the Basel Convention...
posted on: Feb 24, 2026
International law depends on a basic understanding that obligations accepted by states cannot be set aside by administrative preference. Treaties are binding because states have consented to be bound, and that consent cannot be diluted through voluntary guidance adopted by a different institution. Yet in the regulation of ship recycling, this principle is being tested in a way that should concern anyone who takes treaty law seriously. The issue arises from the growing reliance on non-binding instruments adopted within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to manage the overlap between the Basel Convention and the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC). While the objective of improving ship recycling standards is widely shared, the method being used risks weakening a binding environmental treaty through practice rather than law. The Basel Convention governs the transboundary movement of hazardous waste. Its purpose is preventative. Hazardous...
