Shipping Industry Uncertain As Hormuz Crisis Carries On...
posted on: Apr 6, 2026
President Donald Trump announced Friday that the U.S. could open the Strait of Hormuz with “a little more time” as the president continues to adjust his messaging on the passageway between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. Since the U.S.-Israel offensive in Iran began on Feb. 28, the Trump administration has not carried out a plan to open the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil flows. While the president talked Friday of opening the strait, on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put the onus on other countries to help commercial ships stuck in the Persian Gulf. Trump has also said the U.S. does not need the strait, although roughly 9 percent of petroleum comes from Gulf states, USNI News previously reported. The absence of safe passage for merchant vessels has led to uncertainty among the shipping industry, Cichen Shen, the Asia Pacific editor...
Competing Strategies Emerge for Opening the Strait of Hormuz...
posted on: Apr 6, 2026
A resumption of international freedom of movement through the Strait of Hormuz is clearly of vital importance to the maritime community. Doing so by force has, for the moment, been largely ruled out by almost everyone who might be expected to effect it. Not only would it be a risky and high-casualty operation, but it would run the risk of further widening the conflict. It is becoming apparent that, having precipitated the closure of the Strait, the U.S. Administration may, however, wind down its war with Iran without seeing the Strait reopened. So other nations are considering their options. Whereas the United States benefits from the free flow of traffic through the Strait, but is not dependent on it, Gulf countries and others in Asia and Europe are critically reliant on ships transiting the Strait – and without which some countries will face national emergencies, as fuel for power...
Women in Ports: Diversity is a competitive advantage – it’s time the industry treated it like one...

In an exclusive interview, Raj Kehal-Livi, Chief Executive of Women in Ports Ltd, shares the story behind an initiative dedicated to driving greater diversity across the port sector. Grounded in the belief that diversity fuels high performance, the organization is working to support meaningful and measurable change across the industry. “What gets measured gets managed,” Raj emphasizes. She advocates for ports to publish transparent data on gender representation—not just headline figures, but detailed breakdowns across leadership, operations, and board levels. Equally important, she notes, is fostering psychological safety. “Women need to know they can speak up, challenge the status quo, and show up authentically—without it costing them professionally,” she concludes. SAFETY4SEA: What was the original vision behind Women in Ports, and how has that vision evolved since the platform’s inception? Raj Kehal: As Head of Stakeholder Engagement at the Port of London Authority, I attended various industry events, and in November 2023, everything...
Trump Says US Can Take Strait of Hormuz With More Time...
posted on: Apr 5, 2026
April 3 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday said the U.S. can open the Strait of Hormuz with a little more time, as pressure mounts for his administration to find a quick resolution to a war against Iran. “With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL,& MAKE A FORTUNE,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Nearly five weeks after it started ?with a joint U.S.-Israeli aerial assault, the war in Iran continues to spread chaos across the region and roil financial markets, raising the pressure on Trump to find a quick resolution to the conflict. Iran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz , a key waterway that carries about a fifth of the world’s total oil consumption, in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli ?strikes that began in late February. Reopening it has become a priority for governments around the world as energy prices soar. In the...
Chinese Bulker Grounds in Suez Canal Stopping Traffic for Four Hours...
posted on: Apr 5, 2026
A Chinese bulker briefly disrupted traffic for the southbound convoy of the Suez Canal on April 2 after the vessel experienced a reported “technical failure.” While the incident only lasted four hours, it came just past the fifth anniversary of the Ever Given grounding, which blocked the canal for six days, and as analysts have emphasized the importance of the Suez Canal, with the Strait of Hormuz mostly closed. The bulker Xin Tai Yuan (75,413 dwt) was traveling in the north convoy that had left Port Said. The vessel, built in 2001, is 225 meters (738 feet) in length and registered in Panama. Its AIS shows it is coming from Ust-Luga, Russia, and the Suez Canal Authority says it is bound for Singapore. At midday, the ship reported a technical failure and grounded north of Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal. It was near the 87 KM marker in the...
Houthis Release Russian Seafarer in Apparent UN-Brokered Deal...
posted on: Apr 5, 2026
A Russian seafarer, believed to be the last held by the Houthis, was released and flown out of Yemen by the United Nations on April 2. It appears to have been part of a deal arranged by the UN that also brought a number of Houthis who had been receiving medical treatment or who had been stranded overseas back to Sanaa. The seafarer was identified by Reuters as Aleksei Galaktionov, who had been aboard the bulker Eternity C, which was struck in July 2025 while transiting the Red Sea. According to the reports, the Russian seafarer had been badly injured during the incident and had remained in Sanaa for medical treatment. The official statement from the Houthis said he had completed his medical treatment and recovery. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Sanaa said that this step was taken following communications with the Russians and with Iran. It said his...
French and Japanese-Owned Ships Make First Hormuz Crossings...
posted on: Apr 5, 2026
By Weilun Soon and Samy Adghirni (Bloomberg) — A French container ship and a Japanese-owned tanker have crossed the Strait of Hormuz, in what appear to be the first such transits since the war in Iran shuttered the crucial waterway. The CMA CGM Kribi container ship exited the strait on Friday, according to ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg and two people familiar with the situation. That’s the first ship linked to Western Europe that’s known to have made it through since the war began more than a month ago. Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines confirmed on Friday that the liquefied natural gas tanker it part-owns also crossed — another first. Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has practically halted since the US and Israel attacked Iran, with just a trickle of ships able to make the crossing. Those have mostly been vessels associated with nations friendly to Tehran, with a system emerging whereby Iran pre-approves transit...

Why a second global shipping chokepoint could soon live up to its name as the ‘Gate of Tears’...
posted on: Apr 3, 2026
If you’d never heard of the Strait of Hormuz before, you probably have by now. Iran’s effective closure of the waterway, which usually carries about 20% of the world’s oil and gas, has put severe pressure on the global economy. Now, some analysts are warning a new flashpoint could emerge: the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. That’s because on March 28, the Houthis, a military group that controls large parts of northern Yemen and is aligned with Iran, entered the war, launching missiles towards Israel for the first time since the war with Iran began. Yemen is situated on one side of the strait, and the Houthis have previously attacked shipping in the Red Sea, causing major disruption in late 2023 and 2024. Bloomberg now reports Iran has approached the Houthis to prepare for a similar campaign. Here’s why all eyes will be back on the Houthis, Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea, and what disruption of a second major chokepoint could mean...
IMarEST overhauls professional registration standard to reflect digital era demands...
posted on: Apr 3, 2026
The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology has launched a reimagined professional registration standard for the marine technology community, updating its framework to reflect modern workplace demands including digital literacy, data-driven decision-making and sustainability – areas that have become central to maritime operations but were underrepresented in previous assessment criteria. The updated Technology Register, backed by IMarEST’s Royal Charter, supports three professional titles: Marine Technician, Registered Marine Technologist and Chartered Marine Technologist. The revised standard provides clearer career progression pathways and significantly strengthens Continued Professional Development requirements, with reflection, planning and professional growth now directly integrated into candidate assessment rather than treated as supplementary obligations. IMarEST describes itself as the only professional body in the world offering dedicated registration for the marine technology and innovation community – a constituency that spans an unusually broad range of roles including fleet managers, hydrographers, harbour masters, marine surveyors, navigators, deck officers,...
Posidonia survey finds shipping in ‘structured experimentation’ phase with AI...
posted on: Apr 3, 2026
The maritime industry is engaging with artificial intelligence through cautious, selective experimentation rather than wholesale adoption, according to a survey of over 40 exhibitors conducted ahead of the Splash-sponsored Posidonia 2026, with the Athens exhibition shaping up to be the most technology-focused edition yet as the industry navigates both a digital and geopolitical inflection point. The survey, conducted by Posidonia organisers in the run-up to the June 1-5 exhibition at the Athens Metropolitan Expo, reveals three distinct industry camps: active adopters embedding AI into core products and services; companies selectively integrating AI for internal efficiency; and a third group maintaining a watchful, observational stance. Classification societies and technology-native firms appear most advanced. Bureau Veritas is embedding AI in routing optimisation, fuel prediction and risk-based inspection frameworks, while bunker technology firm Nereus Digital describes AI as “not a feature we are adding – it is a structural component of our...
UN: Seafarers face fear and uncertainty in war-torn waters...
posted on: Apr 3, 2026
According to the United Nations, some 20,000 seafarers remain stranded on ships in the Strait of Hormuz as the war in the Middle East continues, a situation which has been described as unprecedented in the post-Second World War era. The seafarers are working on some 2,000 ships including oil and gas tankers, bulk carriers, cargo ships as well as six tourist cruise liners. The ships are trapped in the Persian Gulf and are unable to pass through the narrow strait owing to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Iran borders the strait on its northern side and has said it will only allow passage to “non-hostile” ships. Prior to the conflict, around 150 vessels passed through the waterway every day, but now only four or five do so. On 30 March, two Chinese-flagged cargo ships had reportedly embarked on the four-to-six-hour journey through the strait and into the Gulf...
