posted on: May 15, 2026
The operator of the containership Dali, which destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024, along with one of the company’s technical supervisors, has been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on multiple criminal charges. The DOJ unsealed the indictment it received on April 8 from a federal grand jury that lists a total of 18 charges against Sinergy Marine in Singapore and Synergy Maritime in India as the operators of the Dali, along with a shoreside technical supervisor, Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair. The companies and the technical supervisor are charged with “conspiracy, willfully failing to immediately inform the U.S. Coast Guard of a known hazardous condition, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and false statements.” Synergy is also charged with misdemeanor violations of the Clean Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, and Refuse Act for the discharge of pollutants into the Patapsco River, including shipping containers and their contents, oil,...
1,700 passengers held on cruise ship over potential acute stomach bug sickness...
posted on: May 15, 2026
As many as 1,700 passengers are being held on board a cruise ship in southwest France, after dozens of cases of possible gastroenteritis on board. The ship, named Ambition, was scheduled to sail around France and Spain after picking up passengers from the UK cities of Belfast and Liverpool on May 8 and May 9. Up to 50 passengers on board Ambition were affected by symptoms consistent with an acute stomach sickness, according to the local health agency in the French department of Gironde. The passengers were immediately seen by a doctor and kept in isolation in their rooms, according to the statement. A 92-year-old man died onboard on May 10, the ship’s operator Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed to CNN, although the guest did not report any symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. “The cause of death has yet to be established pending the coroner’s full report. Iraq and Pakistan Strike Iran Transit Deals to Move Oil and LNG Through Hormuz...
posted on: May 15, 2026
By Marwa Rashad and Ahmed Rasheed LONDON/BAGHDAD, May 12 (Reuters) – Both Iraq and Pakistan have cut deals with Iran to ship oil and liquefied natural gas from the Gulf, according to five sources with knowledge of the matter, in a demonstration of Tehran’s ability to control energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has slashed energy exports from a region that normally supplies 20% of the world’s crude oil and LNG. The U.S. has blockaded Iranian ports in recent weeks. And though Iran initially sought to halt traffic through the strait, that stance is now changing, said Claudio Steuer of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Video Unpaused “Iran has shifted from blocking Hormuz to controlling access to it … Hormuz is no longer a neutral transit route, it is a controlled corridor,” he said. With most of its crude exports typically shipped through the strait, Iraq was among...
U.S. Navy Faces Rising Costs for Hormuz Missions With Strait Still Blocked...
posted on: May 13, 2026
(Bloomberg) — As long as the Strait of Hormuz remains unsettled, the US Navy faces millions of dollars in extra costs each time it sends a destroyer through the waterway, and such passages on their own are unlikely to reopen it. The Navy voyages remain fraught, and the ships are accompanied by fighter jets and helicopters overhead, along with extra surveillance measures. If the vessels need to defend themselves against Iranian attack — as three warships did during a transit on Thursday — the price tag could be even higher, involving missiles that cost up to $6 million each. Video Paused Although many of the operating costs are already covered by this year’s defense appropriations, the total for repeatedly escorting commercial shipping in and out of the Gulf would add billions to the price of a conflict the Pentagon says has already rung up $25 billion in expenses — a number others claim is too...
Photos Appear to Show Fire Aboard Iranian VLCC Disabled by U.S. Navy...

New images circulating online appear to show damage and an active fire aboard the Iranian tanker Sea Star III days after the vessel was disabled by a U.S. Navy fighter jet during blockade enforcement operations near the Gulf of Oman. The photos, posted Monday, purportedly show scorch marks and flames near the funnel area of the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) VLCC Sea Star III (IMO 9569205). Notably, the vessel is not carrying any cargo. “The National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) VLCC supertanker SEA STAR III (9569205) after her funnel was fired at by a US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet from USS George H.W. Connecting the Maritime Future: Autonomy, Integration, and the Next Era of Underwater Perception...
posted on: May 13, 2026
The maritime industry is undergoing rapid change. Advancements in autonomy are allowing uncrewed vessels to transit oceans with growing sophistication. A growing network of marine technologies is paving the way for the future of maritime operations. Yet, across all sectors of the industry, adoption of these capabilities is slow to match the pace of innovation. Innovators within the industry must work together to bridge the gap between concept and deployment. Realizing the Potential of Autonomy Autonomy is often discussed as an inevitable path for the maritime industry. It is easy to imagine that for autonomous ships, it is more difficult to integrate the many subsystems that make autonomy viable in practice. Trust remains central in bringing this concept to reality. Policy and regulatory agencies are struggling to determine what this inevitable future looks like. The challenges to overcome are in the awareness of existing technologies and the practical pairing...
Trump Says Iran Ceasefire on ‘Life Support’ as Hormuz Crisis Deepens...
posted on: May 13, 2026
By Nayera Abdallah, Elwely Elwelly and Nandita Bose WASHINGTON/DUBAI, May 11 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Monday that a ceasefire with Iran was “on life support” after he rejected Tehran’s response to a U.S. peace proposal, fueling concerns of a resumption of hostilities in the 10-week-old conflict that has killed thousands and halted vital energy flows. Days after Washington floated a proposal aimed at reopening negotiations, Iran on Sunday released a response focused on ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, where U.S. ally Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. The response had been swiftly rejected by Trump. Asked where the ceasefire stands, Trump told reporters on Monday. “I would call it the weakest right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn’t even finish reading it,” he said. In its response, Tehran also demanded compensation for war damage, emphasized its sovereignty over the Strait of...

The newbuild programme includes Kamsarmax and Capesize vessels designed to meet IMO GHG-EEDI Phase 3 and NOx Tier III requirements, with deliveries scheduled through 2029. Safe Bulkers is strengthening its fleet renewal programme with agreements to acquire four Japanese newbuild dry bulk vessels designed to comply with the latest international emissions standards. The Monaco-based shipowner said the order includes three 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax vessels scheduled for delivery in the first half and third quarter of 2029, alongside one 182,000 dwt Capesize vessel due for delivery in the second half of the same year. According to the company, the Kamsarmax vessels will be financed through existing cash reserves, while the Capesize vessel will be acquired under a 10-year bareboat finance lease with purchase...
Making safety work: How data and digital tools are changing life at sea...
posted on: May 12, 2026
The conversation around seafarers’ safety is not confined to equipment or procedures. Increasingly, it is about information; how it is captured, shared, and turned into meaningful action. In an industry shaped by rising regulatory demands and operational complexity, data, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are practical tools advancing daily life on board. For Esa Henttinen, EVP for Safety Solutions at NAPA, this is the starting point: safety improvements begin with reducing the burden on crews rather than adding to it. Reducing burden, restoring focus Administrative workload has grown sharply in recent years, driven by overlapping regulatory frameworks. According to industry findings, “54%… said that the workload has increased because of this reporting… [and] 44%… said that this reporting is causing a higher stress.” More strikingly, “about one-third had fears of criminalisation due to possible reporting mistakes or errors.” Against this backdrop, digitalisation can either ease pressure or exacerbate it. The difference...
Complex Medical Evacuation Underway After Cruise Reaches Tenerife...
posted on: May 12, 2026
Passengers began disembarking from the exploration cruise ship Hondius on Sunday in Tenerife and are being immediately evacuated by their individual countries. The complex operation has seen planes from at least six countries removing portions of the passengers as well as some of the cruise ship’s crewmembers, and in an agreement with the local authorities, none of them are being permitted entry into Tenerife. The Hondius arrived at the industrial port of Grandilla in southern Tenerife at 0624 local time on Sunday, May 10. The ship had departed Cape Verde at 1915 CET on May 6 after two crewmembers and one passenger were disembarked, and additional medical personnel were placed on the ship. Under an agreement with the local authorities, the cruise ship is being held at anchor and not permitted to dock in the port. The vessel’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, reports that none of the passengers or crew still onboard are showing...
South Korean Investigation Shows Unidentified Projectiles Struck HMM Ship...
posted on: May 12, 2026
South Korea continues its investigation into the damage to an HMM general cargo ship on May 4 while in the Persian Gulf. To put an end to the various speculations, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a briefing on May 10, saying two unidentified projectiles struck the ship, causing the fire that disabled the vessel. The HMM Namu (38,314 dwt) was towed to Dubai and is now in the Drydocks World shipyard. Investigators from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ Marine Safety Tribunal, as well as forensic experts from the National Fire Agency, began their investigation of the vessel on May 8. They are collecting evidence from the engine room of the vessel, reviewing CCTV footage, and interviewing the captain. Based on the CCTV footage and the captain’s accounts, the Ministry says it is certain the vessel was struck by two unidentified “aerial objects” at an interval of about one...
Qatari LNG Tanker Sailing Towards Hormuz Strait...
posted on: May 12, 2026
May 9 (Reuters) – Qatari LNG tanker Al Kharaitiyat was sailing towards the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after departing Qatar’s Ras Laffan en route to Port Qasim in Pakistan, according to LSEG shipping data. A successful passage would mark the first transit by a Qatari LNG tanker through the strait since the start of the war on Iran. There was no immediate comment from QatarEnergy. The LNG is being sold by Qatar to Pakistan – a mediator in the war – under a government-to-government deal, according to two people familiar with the matter. They said Iran had approved the shipment to help build confidence with Qatar and Pakistan. Pakistan has been in discussions with Iran to allow a limited number of LNG tankers to pass through the strait, as Islamabad urgently needs to address its gas shortage, a source briefed on the agreement told Reuters. Iran agreed to assist, and the two sides are coordinating the first vessel’s safe passage carrying...
