A containership whose construction was abandoned in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis has finally entered commercial service, marking the revival of one of Turkish shipbuilding’s longest-running unfinished projects. According to Alphaliner, the 917 teu Behram Box has been delivered and chartered to Shipping Solutions, a DP World business formerly known as Unifeeder, ending a journey that began around 20 years ago when the vessel was first ordered from Turkey’s Um Shipyard. The ship is the first of two sister vessels that spent more than a decade sitting incomplete at the yard after construction stalled during the global financial crisis. Both hulls remained largely dormant from 2012 until last year before investors decided to revive the project amid strong demand for feeder tonnage and a tight charter market. The Nautical Institute draws lessons learned from an incident where a dry cargo vessel in ballast suffered a forward compartment explosion caused by leaked propane gas in an improperly used makeshift workshop. At around 2100, when the vessel was approximately 35 nautical miles from shore, there was an explosion in a forward compartment. The explosion tore open parts of the forward mooring deck.
