According to Bangladeshi media, a bulker ran aground near the Russian port of Ust-Luga in late December and remained on the rocks for weeks, despite appeals to the local authorities for assistance. The previously-unreported casualty involved the Bangladeshi-owned and -crewed bulker Meghna Princess, operated by the country’s largest shipowner, Meghna Group. On December 29, the Princess went off course due to GPS jamming – a common phenomenon in the Baltic – and struck an underwater rock near Ust-Luga. It damaged its hull and flooded several tank, according to The Business Standard, which drew on reports from the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association (BMMOA). In an exclusive report, Reuters revealed today, March 6, that the Trump administration is considering ways to delay the shipping of Iranian oil by inspecting tankers. Citing six unnamed sources, Reuters says the Trump administration is considering leveraging a 2003 agreement designed to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction to slow the delivery of Iranian oil and increase pressure on the supply chain and counterparties. According to the report, tankers would be stopped for inspections in major sea lanes and critical points such as the Malacca Strait. South Korea’s SM Line issued a customer alter on March 5 reporting that one of its vessels has experienced damaged and lost containers in a Pacific storm. The SM Portland (51,314 dwt) has resumed its voyage bound for Vancouver where it will be inspected by Canadian authorities. “Due to heavy rolling by the inclement weather, unfortunately, it caused cargo damage, including container loss, collapse, and damage of 115 containers,” SM advised. Customers are being instructed to check their documents to determine if they might have had boxes onboard the vessel which had called in China and South Korea before departing for Vancouver where it was due to arrive on March 10. Kazakhstan’s main rail network operator Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) signed a memorandum of understanding with transport and logistics services firm PTC Holding for the construction of a container terminal in Georgia. The two will look to build a multimodal container terminal in the city of Poti in Georgia with a capacity of over 80,000 teu per year. The total investment in the project is $30m. The terminal will become part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) which will ensure efficient processing of cargo and increase the volume of cargo transportation along the route. The agreement was signed during meetings of the working group on the development of TITR. The Office of US Trade Representatives (USTR) has proposed a fee ranging from $500,000 to $1.5m per US port call by any Chinese carrier, Chinese vessel, or other carrier that has Chinese vessels as part of their global fleet. Airfreight and seafreight data platform Xeneta has warned that the move could have unintended consequences for ocean shipping, resulting in congestion, higher freight rates and even shifts in trade patterns. Colombo, March 3 (Daily Mirror)- Indian Naval Ship Kuthar, an indigenously built Khukri class Corvette arrived Colombo port today for three days visit. The ship was welcomed in a traditional manner with the tunes of Sri Lankan Navy band and the officers. On arrival, the Commanding Officer of the Ship, Commander Nitin Sharma called on the Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral M.H.C.J. Silva. In a ceremony onboard, the ship formally handed over a refilled cylinder of the Fire-fighting system, an essential component of major safety system installed on the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Ship Suraksha.
