Due to delays in the process of incorporating the FuelEU Maritime Regulation into the EEA Agreement, it is unlikely that Norway will implement it by 1 January 2025. This also means that the Norwegian regulation cannot be established before the end of the year. The EEA process consists of several steps, and delays may therefore occur. Norway is working to ensure that the EEA Committee’s decision is made as quickly as possible. However, it now appears that it will not be possible to achieve this in time for it to enter into force by 1 January 2025. As assessed by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate, this delay means that Norwegian and Icelandic ports from 1 January 2025 until their incorporation into the EEA Agreement will be considered third-country ports in the FuelEU context. Vessels have been repeatedly warned of the dangers while transiting the Singapore Strait but the latest report includes a rare instance of violence against the crew. Ambrey is reporting that a crewmember was stabbed and taken ashore to a hospital overnight on Wednesday, December 11. Most of the incidents in the Singapore Strait are attempted robberies of spare parts or other equipment from vessels most often underway. Usually, they are small groups of people at most armed with knives and when spotted or confronted the boarders flee. However, according to last night’s report, two boarders were seen aboard a tanker underway transiting eastbound through the Phillip Channel. A Singapore-flagged tanker was attacked by two armed individuals while transiting eastbound through the Phillip Channel in the Singapore Strait off Indonesia. As reported, the suspects, armed with bladed weapons, were detected on the vessel’s stern poop deck during the incident, which occurred on the evening of 10 December. During the attack, a crew member sustained multiple stab wounds and was later hospitalized after the ship reached Singapore’s Eastern Petroleum A Anchorage.
