The United Arab Emirates-based DP World and Denmark-based A.P. Moller–Maersk, on Thursday expressed interests in making big investments in Bangladesh’s shipping industry to help the country build new ports along the coast of the Bay of Bengal and become a major global export hub. The China Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) has started a focused inspection campaign from January 15 to October 14, 2025, to enhance safety for personnel who access enclosed spaces aboard ships. By January 2025, InterManager estimated that around 350 seafarers and third-party workers had died from asphyxiation in enclosed spaces onboard ships since 1996, with 43 accidents since 2022 accounting for 70 of these deaths. This campaign aims to mitigate risks and prevent accidents related to such operations. The campaign applies to all ships and waterborne facilities that contain enclosed spaces. These spaces are defined as having one or more of the following characteristics: Limited entry and exit points Insufficient ventilation Not intended for continuous human occupation Inspection process: A maximum of one special inspection will be conducted per ship during the campaign period. Stuart Chirls China is leveraging unfair trade practices to dominate the global ocean shipping and shipbuilding markets, a U.S. investigation has found. The investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of unfair practices determined that China for decades has taken aim at specific industries by undercutting competition in order to command dominant market share. In a House of Lords debate, Defence Minister Lord Coaker detailed the UK’s robust response to escalating threats against critical undersea infrastructure, particularly internet and energy cables. The discussion followed incidents of cable sabotage in the Baltic Sea, including the arrest of the Russian-linked vessel “Eagle S” by Finnish authorities on Christmas Day. Alex Luck 22 Jan 2025 The Chinese Navy (PLAN) today commissioned the first of two Type 054B new generation frigates in Qingdao, Shandong province. The ceremony represents a major milestone a little over two years after the modules for the first hull were spotted at builder Hudong in Shanghai around December 2022. Hudong had launched the hull in August 2023 and the ship started sea trials one year ago in January 2024. Both existing frigates have received their hull number, 545 and 555 respectively, at the end of last year. The first ship has now received the name “Luohe” (漯河). After commissioning the new frigate will serve with PLAN’s Northern Theater Navy (or North Sea Fleet). The second Type 054B should enter service in the near future.
