The Mission to Seafarers has today published the results of the latest Seafarers Happiness Index, which reveal a fall in happiness in several areas of seafaring life to 6.91 in Q4 2024, from 7.16 in Q3 of last year. This marks the first downturn for four quarters, with restrictive port policies highlighted as a significant impediment to seafarer welfare. The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) is a quarterly survey conducted by the Mission to Seafarers, in partnership with Idwal and NorthStandard, and supported by Inmarsat. It provides vital insights into the experiences of the men and women who serve at sea, highlighting the areas most in need of attention and action. This year’s first modern VLCC sale is in the pipeline. Brokers report that the eight-year-old, 300,000 dwt Leicester was sold for $87m to undisclosed interests. Broking sources tell Splash that an Oslo-based private equity fund, Transportation Recovery Fund (TRF), is selling the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding-built tanker. The last comparable deal is from August last year when Evangelos Marinakis-led Capital Maritime sold a one-year older supertanker named Atromitos, for $96.52m, to Saudi Arabia’s Bahri as part of a landmark $1bn deal where the Greek outfit sold nine VLCCs. So-called freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs) that the U.S. Navy has been carrying out against China’s extensive maritime claims in the South China Sea, have proved ineffective and even risk escalating tensions, Australian research found. The findings, in the paper “Don’t Shoot the Messenger: Perception & Misperception in the South China Sea,” by Nell Bennett, are part of the Blue Security program, a collaboration between various Australian universities and institutes. Seafarer abandonment cases are soaring, according to the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and the numbers hit an unwanted all-time record in 2024. ITF blames the growing problem on the lack of enforcement that low-quality shipowners can obtain from the lowest-quality open registries. Abandonment is not a feature of name-brand global operators. The cases are concentrated among the oldest, most worn-down vessels with little-known shipowners. By walking away, disreputable or bankrupt owners save on the cost of back wages, crew sustenance and repatriation, and can leave behind any outstanding debts or fines that the vessel might have accumulated. In general, abandoned crews go through months or years without proper food, water, or wages, often in poor living conditions. Last year, more than 3,100 seafarers were abandoned aboard more than 300 vessels around the world.
