" ....................... In December, 1999, one of my batchmate, Md. Shafiul Azam joined there as 2nd mate. But I am deeply shocked and surprised to know that on the 1st April, 2000, he was found dead in his cabin bathroom. Though the proper investigation has yet to be done, but after a conversation with the master of the vessel by telephone it was found that after the Asar prayer (the whole complement is fortunately from Bangladesh) he was absent in dinner. But when time came for watch handing over the 3rd mate couldn't get him on the phone. After a long try he informed the Chief Mate. When the matter went to the master he opened the cabin with master key and found Shafiul passed away (inna.........) in his cabin lavatory. He had some bruises on his back side of head and a deep mark of laceration in right side of the forehead. The ship was on her way to Japan from Australia. She is supposed to reach Japan on 7th April, 2000. The most shocking thing is that he became a father of a sweet daughter just three months earlier but he couldn't give his child a hug.. We pay our deep tribute to Shafiul Azam and pray for his departed soul. He was a very nice guy as best way possible known to us, very much perky, self styled and very enthusiastic about his carrear. He was only 27..............."
