Thun Tankers books custom newbuilds for constrained routes

Sweden’s Thun Tankers has ordered two purpose-built product carriers designed for restricted waterways and smaller ports.
The Gothenburg-based operator, part of Erik Thun Group, said the vessels will be built at Dutch yard Ferus Smit for delivery in 2028 and 2029, without revealing the price tag.
The ships will introduce the so-called “AccessMAX” design, tailored for operations in constrained waterways, including Sweden’s Lake Vänern, while retaining flexibility for wider North Sea and northwest European trading, the company noted.
The 4,500 dwt ice-classed newbuilds will measure 89 m in length with a beam of 13.35 m and a cargo capacity of about 5,000 cu m – about 10% higher cargo intake than earlier generations of comparable vessels.
The order continues Erik Thun’s long-standing tie-up with Ferus Smit, which has delivered more than 50 vessels to the group over the years.
