Update on Captain Mahbubur Rahman (40N) and Meghna Prestige

Tuesday, April 4, 2025

Eid Mubarak

The next hearing for Captain Mahbub and the vessel Meghna Prestige is on 21st April. Please pray for a positive outcome in this hearing. Meanwhile, the ship is in the exact location in Tucupita, Delta Amacuro State, Venezuela.

One change for Captain Mahbub is that his detention cell has been changed. From February 1, 2025, Captain Mahbub and Mr. Johnny, the diving supervisor, shared the same room on the Second floor of the police station for about two months, where they could at least move and talk. On 28th March, the authority shifted him to another personal room on the first floor, which is very congested and also under lock and key for 24 hours from the outside.  He wished he had received better treatment.

Two months have already passed here. It’s challenging to pass the time in a single room for an extended period. Initially, his lawyers always gave him hope for early release, but it seems like he is losing hope. Captain Mahbub learned from the lawyers that the vessel was released last week; however, unfortunately, the sailing schedule was cancelled on 28th March, apparently due to objections from the plaintiff’s lawyers.

On behalf of the Bangladesh Marine Academy Alumni Association (BMAAA) and the broader maritime community, we extend our heartfelt prayers for Captain Mahbub and his crew. We stand in unwavering solidarity with our alumni and fellow Bangladeshi seafarers who are enduring this incredibly difficult time.

May justice prevail, and may they soon find relief from this ordeal.

In solidarity,

Ghulam M. Suhrawardi, President

Bangladesh Marine Academy Alumni Association
