Dear BMAAA alumni,

Aslamualikum,

It is now known that I am contesting the election to represent BMAAA and you as the President. I thought it would be convenient to let you know about myself so that you know the person who wants to represent you.

I am a freedom fighter.  

I defected from a Pakistani flagship, “Ocean Endeavour,” in Baltimore, USA, on May 1, 1971.  I was involved in various activities and dedicated myself to Bangladesh’s liberation war. I attended most of the protest meetings and demonstrations in the USA to build up public opinion for the cause of Bangladesh.

While in the USA, I was admitted to the State University of NY Maritime College, graduating with an MS in Marine Transportation Management in 1976.  I was declared a distinguished alumni in 2010.

At this stage, due to prevalent situations, I chose to stay ashore to further my career in the USA.

I started my business in the USA in 1979 and have been in the same business with a few extensions and subsidiaries. I have succeeded reasonably well for a non-white to lead in the maritime industry in the USA.

Amongst the credentials, I was elected as the “President of the National Association of Marine Surveyors” (NAMS) in 1986. I was the first non-white person to be the President of this American entity. I was a board member of the New York Maritime College Alumni Association. I am a life member of the American Alumni Association (AAA) and Cadet College Club Limited, Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have been a member of the Kurmitola Golf Club for 15 years.

Even though I live in the USA, I travel frequently to Bangladesh to look after my businesses here and to attend other social organizations I am involved with.

I have a house and an office in Dhaka with 80 employees in Bangladesh.

I established an English medium residential school and college in my village in Matlab, Chandpur. It is styled similar to a Cadet College. Extended to this establishment, there is a primary and nursery school. These were established about 15 years ago.

These organizations have been built with my finances from the USA and run as a non-profit organization without government help.

I have contributed books and scholarships to the Bangladesh Marine Academy for about two decades. My contributions began in 2000 when Captain Helal Uddin, Commandant, requested books for the Academy cadets. I shipped full sets of Nautical and Engineering books from London to comply his request. They made copies of these books for the cadets to study. BMA was not well equipped at that time.

In subsequent years, I also contributed many scholarships to the needy cadets in the academy. 

At my initiative, the maritime museum was established in the Marine Academy with materials from the USA. All the expenses and the salary of the museum attendant were borne by myself.

I was personally involved during the unification process of the two alumni associations. After three years of negotiations and working with diverse opinions, I unified the alumni’s spirit and content. For me, we are the same family. Disunity is not an option. We must be unified with limited resources to succeed for the alumni’s existing and future generations.

In a nutshell, I have been involved with the well-being of the BMA for many years.

This place allowed me to be what I am today.

Similarly, I would expect all the alumni to jump in and fully support the academy in any form or shape. We must remember that we received a lot from this institution for free. Actually it was not free. The poor Bangladeshi citizens paid for it and we should never forget that. It is now our time for giving – giving services and funds.

Even though I am competing with another candidate, I solemnly promise to work with everyone who wins this election.

I love the academy, and nothing else can stop me from doing something for this great institution. The election is a process that is very democratic, and the members must choose their next leader. I urge you to vote for whoever you like, but I am a candidate and expect your support and vote.

We must faithfully raise funds and lobby the authorities to improve the facilities. All alumni must work together toward one goal—improving the academy on every front.

আপনারা জানেন, আমি আপনাদের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করতে বাংলাদেশ মেরিন একাডেমি অ্যালামনাই অ্যাসোসিয়েশন নির্বাচনে সভাপতি পদে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করছি।

আমার মনে হয়েছে, আমার পরিচয় আপনাদের জানানো প্রয়োজন; যাতে আপনাদের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করা ব্যক্তির ব্যাপারে সম্যক অবগত হতে পারেন।

আমি বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের একজন । ১৯৭১ সালের ১ মে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাল্টিমোরে আমাকে পাকিস্তানি ফ্ল্যাগশিপ ‘ওশান এন্ডেভার’ ছাড়তে হয়েছিল। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বিভিন্ন কর্মকা-ে যুক্ত হয়ে নিজেকে মুক্তিযুদ্ধে উৎসর্গ করি। বাংলাদেশের পক্ষে জনমত তৈরিতে সে সময় এখানকার প্রায় সব সভা-সমাবেশে আমার অংশগ্রহণ ছিল।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে অবস্থানকালীন আমি স্টেট ইউনিভার্সিটি অব নিউইয়র্ক মেরিটাইম কলেজে ভর্তি হই। সেখান থেকে ১৯৭৬ সালে মেরিন ট্রান্সপোর্টেশন ম্যানেজমেন্টে এমএস ডিগ্রি অর্জন করি। সময় এবং পরিস্থিতির আলোকে ক্যারিয়ার এগিয়ে নিতে সাগর ছেড়ে তীরে থাকাকেই বেছে নিয়েছি।

১৯৭৯ সালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিজের ব্যবসা শুরু করি। ব্যবসার কিছু সম্প্রসারণ এবং সাবসিডিয়ারির সঙ্গে একই ব্যবসায় রয়েছি। মার্কিন মেরিটাইম শিল্পে নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে অ-শে^তাঙ্গ হিসেবে মোটামুটি সাফল্যও পেয়েছি।

১৯৮৬ সালে আমি ন্যাশনাল অ্যাসোসিয়েশন অব মেরিন সার্ভেয়রস (এনএএমএস)-এর সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হই। আমি এই মার্কিন সংস্থার প্রথম অ-শে^তাঙ্গ প্রেসিডেন্ট। আমি নিউইয়র্ক মেরিটাইম কলেজ অ্যালামনাই অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের বোর্ড সদস্য ছিলাম। আমি আমেরিকান অ্যালামনাই অ্যাসোসিয়েশন (এএএ) এবং ক্যাডেট কলেজ ক্লাব লিমিটেড, ঢাকা, বাংলাদেশ-এর আজীবন সদস্য। ১৫ বছর ধরে আমি কুর্মিটোলা গলফ ক্লাবের সদস্য।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বসবাস করলেও, ব্যবসার দেখাশোনা এবং আমার সংশ্লিষ্টতা থাকা সামাজিক সংগঠনগুলোর অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দিতে আমি প্রায় বাংলাদেশ ভ্রমণ করি। ঢাকায় আমার একটি বাড়ি এবং একটি অফিস আছে, যেখানে ৮০ জন কর্মচারী কাজ করেন।

চাঁদপুরের মতলবে আমার গ্রামে আমি একটি ইংরেজি-মাধ্যম আবাসিক স্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছি। এর ধরন ক্যাডেট কলেজের মতো। এর সঙ্গে একটি প্রাথমিক এবং নার্সারি স্কুলও রয়েছে। ১৫ বছর আগে প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর যাত্রা শুরু। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে আমার অর্থায়নে প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো নির্মিত হয়। সরকারি সহায়তা ছাড়া অলাভজনক প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে এগুলো পরিচালিত হচ্ছে।

আমি প্রায় দুই দশক ধরে বাংলাদেশ মেরিন একাডেমিতে বই এবং বৃত্তি দিচ্ছি। কমান্ড্যান্ট ক্যাপ্টেন হেলাল উদ্দিন একাডেমি ক্যাডেটদের জন্য বইয়ের অনুরোধ করলে ২০০০ সালে আমার এই কর্মকা- শুরু হয়। তার অনুরোধকে সম্মান জানিয়ে আমি নটিক্যাল এবং ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং বইগুলোর পুরো সেট লন্ডন থেকে পাঠিয়েছি। তারা ক্যাডেটদের পড়াশোনার জন্য বইগুলোর কপি তৈরি করতেন। বিএমএ তখন সুসজ্জিত ছিল না। পরের বছরগুলোতে আমি একাডেমির অসচ্ছল ক্যাডেটদের অনেক বৃত্তিও দিয়েছি।

আমার উদ্যোগে মেরিন একাডেমিতে মার্কিন সামগ্রী দিয়ে সামুদ্রিক জাদুঘরটি প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। জাদুঘর দেখভাল করা লোকদের যাবতীয় খরচ এবং বেতন আমি নিজেই বহন করেছি। এককথায়, বিএমএ-র কল্যাণকর কাজের সঙ্গে আমি অনেক বছর ধরে জড়িত। এই কর্মকা-ই আমাকে আজকের অবস্থানে উপনীত করেছে।

আমি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে দুই অ্যালামনাই অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের একীভূত করার প্রক্রিয়ায় সম্পৃক্ত ছিলাম। তিন বছরের আলোচনা ও মতামতের ভিত্তিতে অ্যালামনাইকে একীভূত করতে সক্ষম হয়েছি। আমার মতে, আমরা এক পরিবারভুক্ত। অনৈক্য কোনো বিকল্প হতে পারে না। অ্যালামনাইর বর্তমান এবং ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের সাফল্যের জন্য সীমিত সম্পদের মধ্যে আমাদের একীভূত থাকতে হবে।

একইভাবে আমি আশা করব, সব প্রাক্তন শিক্ষার্থী একাডেমিকে পুরোদমে সহায়তা করতে নিজ নিজ অবস্থান থেকে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়বেন। আমাদের অবশ্যই মনে রাখতে হবে, বিনামূল্যে এই প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে আমরা অনেক কিছুই পেয়েছি। এখন আমাদের দেওয়ার সময়।  সেবা এবং তহবিল প্রদানের সময়।

নির্বাচনে আমি অন্য প্রার্থীর সঙ্গে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করছি। কিন্তু দৃঢ়ভাবে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছি, যারা নির্বাচনে বিজয়ী হবেন, তাদের সবার সঙ্গে আমি কাজ করে যাব।

আমি এই একাডেমিকে ভালোবাসি। কোনো কিছুই আমাকে এই মহান প্রতিষ্ঠানের জন্য কাজ করা থেকে বিরত রাখতে পারবে না। নির্বাচন হলো একমাত্র গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়া। যেখানে সদস্যরাই তাদের পরবর্তী নেতা নির্বাচন করেন। আমার আহ্বান- আপনারা যাকে খুশি তাকে ভোট দেবেন। তবে, একজন প্রার্থী হিসেবে আমি আপনাদের সমর্থন এবং ভোট প্রত্যাশা করছি।

আমাদেরকে অবশ্যই বিশ^স্ততার সঙ্গে তহবিল সংগ্রহ করতে হবে। সুযোগ-সুবিধা বাড়াতে কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে দেন দরবার করতে হবে। প্রাক্তন সব শিক্ষার্থীকে অবশ্যই একটি লক্ষ্য অর্জনে একসঙ্গে কাজ করতে হবে। সেই  লক্ষ্য হলো- প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রে একাডেমির উন্নয়ন।

My Dear Fellow Alumni Members,
Assalamu Alaikum & Good Day.

Hope this message finds you & your family in the best of health & mind.

I am writing to express my interest in running for the position of President in the upcoming BMAAA Executive Committee Election (2024-2025). I believe that I have the necessary skills, experience, and vision to lead the organization and help it achieve its goals.

As a long-time member of the BMAAA, I have had the opportunity to work with many of you and have seen firsthand the dedication and commitment that you bring to the organization. I am confident that, if elected, I can build on this foundation and help take the BMAAA to new heights.

I am from the 15th Batch (1978-80) of Bangladesh Marine Academy, and have served in the Merchant Navy until 1993, with the last few years as Master on Board. Since then, I am self-employed, heading a range of businesses, related to Logistics, ICT products for the Financial Industry, Security Services and Sports Development and Promotion.

Inherent of my nature, I am a dedicated community worker, organizer & patronize various social work. I was actively associated with BMMOA activities in the Eighties. While there was no duly formed alumni association of the Ex-cadets, few of us had to organize Ruby Jubilee (2002) of our Alma Mater, Bangladesh Marine Academy, steadfastly with all limitations, where my role needs no emphasis. Having been involved with the organization of the same, again we took the challenge, along with the dedicated fraternity, to make the Golden Jubilee more participatory, decorative & enjoyable, where my all-round involvement & contribution, was appreciated by all. Along with all other teamwork, I managed sponsorships from AB Bank, Partex Group, Metro group & many other companies which paved the way for success, together with ATN Bangla as the media partner.

You may also recall my role & activities as elected President of the then AABMA for the term of (2018-19), which ultimately volunteered the way for the merger to BMAAA successfully along with coordination of logistical, organizational & litigation preparations & absorbing all the expenses for the same. I am happy to share with you that after the merger, we have successfully handed over Taka 15 Lac to BMAAA, closing the account/transaction of AABMA. 

In addition to managing my own companies, I have had always taken keen interest in the various associations and trade bodies, in various capacities, just to name a few, as below:

• President of the Association of Cargo Agents of Bangladesh (ACAB) for ten years.
• Chairman of HURDCO School Management Committee for 7 years.
• Co-Chairman of FBCCI Standing Committee for Air Transport & Cargo.
  
   
• President of GULSHAN Club, Dhaka, for two terms in 2020 and 2021.
• Through my company, I have also had the honor of being Co-organizer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon since 2021, while actively promoting sporting events.

I am also a member of Dhaka Club, Uttara Club, Dhaka Boat Club, Kurmitola Golf Club, Savar Golf Club, All Community Club, Banani Club, Baridhara Diplomatic Enclave Club, Gulshan North Club, Chittagong Boat Club & Gulshan Society.

Should I be elected as the President, I with my teammates, pledge the following, along with any other constructive suggestions that may come from the fraternity, with a view to the welfare & wellbeing of its members & the ALMA MATER.

1. Make BMAAA a vibrant association along with congenial atmosphere for the participation & representation of all members, with cooperation from the EC members.
2. Work closely & objectively with the Academy for the betterment of the institution & the profession.
3. Make the present constitution compatible to the present requirements with a holistic approach.
4. Ensure Batch wise representation of the members for better communication and management.
5. Try to set up Permanent office spaces for BMAAA, in Chattogram & Dhaka.
6. Try & initiate, full time staff for the offices, as much as possible.
7. Maintain an updated website with continuous monitoring.
8. Establish & set up, functionable Advisory Committees & Sub-Committees.
9. Establish an Ethics Committee to resolve all enquiries & disputes.
10. Create functional/interactive BMAAA chapters, in SPORE-HK (Far-East) / UAE (Middle-East) / UK (EEU) / USA / AUS-NZ (Australasia), & try to organize regional get together, as much as possible.
11. Work towards effective representation of the alumni/BMAAA in related Shipping & Govt departments.
12. Try & achieve, a stronger legal position for the Alumni to serve better in the trade bodies.
13. Communicate & pursue, with all relevant stake holders, to bring about constructive changes in
    the Shipping & Maritime sector.
14. Explore the possibility of Marine Cadre establishment in the Govt services.
15. Deal with any Contemporary relevant & urgent issues of the Alumni & the Academy.

In my personal life, I am happily married to Shahela Rahman and have two great sons and a wonderful daughter. All my children are happily married & have blessed us with two darling grandchildren. Further to that, they have competently acquired & are running my business affairs, making me somewhat relaxed & free, to focus on my passions.

What makes me unique for spearheading BMAAA, is that I have the Passion, Time & Energy, I have my Financial freedom and I have the requisite connectivity. My experience has given me the skills and knowledge necessary to lead BMAAA effectively. I am committed to working collaboratively with all members of the Executive Committee to ensure that the BMAAA remains a vibrant and dynamic organization that serves the needs of its members.

Thereby, I humbly approach you with a request for your kind blessings and support in the forthcoming Election for the Post of President of BMAAA, and assure you of my best services to the Alumni & the Academy, along with the team/EC Committee.

So, my request to all – cast your valuable vote to the deserving candidate and encourage other voters to join in & help the democratic process to endorse your constructive & meaningful thoughts & ideology.

My apologies for not being able to personally communicate with you all due to the shortage of time and the delay in publishing the voters list with voter information.
