NOVEMBER 23, 2018
Geneva – Kitack Lim has won re-election for a second four-year term as secretary general of the International Maritime Organization.
The former president of Busan Port Authority, Lim has served as the Republic of Korea’s deputy permanent representative to IMO from 2006 to 2009 and was chairman of the sub-committee on flag state implementation (FSI) from 2002 to 2004.
During his first term, Lim has achieved what he himself considers the “IMO’s biggest impact in its 60-year history,” the IMO’s new rules that cut ships’ emissions of sulphur by 2020 either by reducing its content in marine fuel from 3.5% to 0.5% from 2020 or by requiring ships to remove it from exhaust fumes.
