The Esteemed Captain Prodip Anwar

Prodip Anwar, a Fauzian, joined  Merchant Marine in 1969 as a direct entry Deck Cadet. I first met him in 1969 at Jacob Lane, Karachi, whilst undergoing Marine Engg apprenticeship.  The renowned “Jacob Lane” hostel was the seat of “Adda” from 1st batch to 7th batch mariners. Since then we have grown up together. We sailed on ships, crossed at sea and socialised at various ports across the globe. Our friendship was furthered due to our migration and settlement in Melbourne in 1992.

On 17th May, 2013, Prodip departed after prolonged illness. He is remembered as one of the best Officers and Captains in the merchant marine. He was a role model for manners, ethics and relationship.  He was gifted with special quality to praise people and carried natural charisma.

When the Doctor told him that he would expire within few days, he replied with a smile, “Thank you for your care”.

When I contacted, Mrs Susmita Islam (Prodip’s mother) in Dhaka with the sad news, I could hear the sound of her tears. I could feel the sobbing breaths of a helpless mother. Prodip was her whole world.  I have never seen such deep love, affection and bond between a mother and a son.

A private commemoration was held on 17th of May, 2014. All Mariners plus  some  invited friends were in attendance.

Thanks for sharing this sad but important news.

I had the honor to know and sail with Capt. Prodip Anwar in early eighties and, still cherish memories of those good old days. What a gentlemen he was. It is seldom that you come across a person now a days with such pleasing personality and integrity. I am certain whoever had an opportunity to know him would miss him greatly.

May God give his family the courage and fortitude to go through this difficult times.

May God rest his soul in peace.

Thanks for sharing these posts about Capt Pradip Anwar, a legendary Merchant Marine, Captain, wonderful, pleasing and a person of strong integrity that attracted all persons, specially mariners those who came in contact with him.

I had the opportunity and previlage to sailing with him in early eighties on board ships
of BSC. Then BSC was a vibrant National Flag Carrier of B’desh and we sailed in Far Eastern and West European Routes for about a year or so.

He was a person of style with good humility, with pleasing Character that we all on board
had an exceptional sailing and shipboard life along with highest order of professional
discipline. We called Venice, if remember in August 1984.There after Western European Ports of UK, Holland, Belgium and Germany including few Baltic Ports of Poland and Sweden.

There are so many good things to remember about him and we enjoyed all to the fullest of it.

May Allah keep his departed Soul in ETERNAL PEACE and the Family along with Bhabi to withstand the loss of such a person of great moral courage and strength.
