posted on: Nov 24, 2024

The Liberian Registry, the world’s largest registry, and the Korean Register (KR) have granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the basic design of a wing sail-equipped LNG carrier. The wing sail, an eco-friendly auxiliary propulsion system, generates thrust through lift created by the pressure difference between the upper and lower sections of its wing structure, resembling the form of a sail. In addition to the wing sail, the design features a forward bridge placement that effectively resolves the major navigation visibility challenges commonly encountered with wind-assisted propulsion systems. SHI expects that by integrating the wing sail with its proprietary “SAVER Wind” air resistance reduction device, wind resistance will be further minimized, enabling the system to harness wind propulsion and lower carbon emissions. According to the U.K. Department of Transport’s Clean Marine Plan, the wind propulsion technology market is projected to grow to $2.5 billion by...

By Eloisa Tovee, Xeneta  19/11/2024 Earlier this month, Donald Trump won a second term in the White House. During his campaign, Trump pledged an economic policy that promises to revitalise American manufacturing and counter what the US regards as China’s unfair trade practices. Trump has vowed tariffs of up to 20% on all imports into the US and additional tariffs of 60% on goods from China. The US already imposes tariffs in those ranges, and higher on certain categories of goods, notably a 100% tariff rate on EVs. The last time Trump ramped up tariffs on Chinese imports during the trade war in 2018, ocean container shipping freight rates spiked more than 70% – applying ever greater strain on global ocean supply chains. As reported on 6 November 2024, Peter Sand, Xeneta chief analyst warned that: “Shipping is a global industry feeding on international trade, so another Trump presidency is a step in the...

Liner shipping is firmly on track for its most profitable year outside the covid era. The container shipping industry had total net income of $26.8bn in the third quarter, a sharp 164% increase sequentially from the $10.2bn earnings reported in Q2, according to data compiled by John McCown-led Blue Alpha Capital.   Compared to last year’s third quarter, net income in this quarter represented an increase of $24bn or 856% from the $2.8bn profit in the year ago quarter. Putting the third quarter in perspective, the $26.8bn earned is more than twice what the container shipping industry earned in any previous full year outside of the covid era. The stunningly strong earnings seen in 2024 have emanated from the Red Sea shipping crisis, as well as robust volumes seen across all trade lanes. The $26.8bn earned in Q3 is more than twice what the container shipping industry earned in any...

On the first anniversary of the start of the Red Sea crisis, the UN Security Council called on the group to release the hijacked car carrier Galaxy Leader and the 25 crewmembers that the group has held hostage since 2023.  The Galaxy Leader has been in Houthi custody since November 19, 2023, when the group’s commandos boarded the vessel using a helicopter and quickly seized control of the bridge. It was the group’s first and last hijacking, but it was a harbinger of countless kinetic attacks that followed. Houthi forces have since struck at more than 100 vessels using drones and missiles, sinking two ships, damaging countless others, and killing four seafarers. In a statement, the Security Council called for the Houthis to cease their campaign of attacks on merchant shipping, and emphasized that the UN arms embargo on Yemen could be an important tool in reducing threats to maritime security if enforced....

Pilots working in some ports in Brazil have in some instances refused to board vessels that do not maintain adequate working conditions, specifically concerning temperature control on the bridge and in pilot cabins, according to Gard Club. The refusal is driven by local labour regulations, which mandate specific temperature ranges for the safety and comfort of employees. Vessels not complying with the regulations could face significant operational delays, financial losses, and potential port state control inspections. Managers and their seafarers should check that the vessel’s air conditioning is working properly prior to arriving in Brazil.  Case Study Amazon river pilots recorded a temperature of 28°C on the bridge of a vessel departing the port of Manaus. Citing thermal discomfort caused by a faulty air conditioning system, the pilots directed the vessel to anchor at Santarem and disembarked. Although the flag state issued a dispensation, the pilots refused to board...
