Ocean Ark is a groundbreaking fish farming vessel The Ocean Ark is a groundbreaking fish farming vessel designed to transform offshore salmon aquaculture. Developed by Chilean company Ocean Ark Tech (OATECH), this 170-meter-long, 64-meter-wide trimaran features advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and self-cleaning copper cages, ensuring optimal fish health and low environmental impact. With a biomass capacity of up to 3,900 tonnes, it promises healthier fish at lower costs compared to traditional farming systems. Powered by diesel-electric motors, the vessel can travel up to four knots or be towed into position, withstanding waves up to seven meters high. It features eight or four large fish cages and is crewed by 20 people. The vessel aims to reduce risks associated with coastal aquaculture, such as algae blooms and storms, by operating far offshore. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with shipyards in Turkey and China for its construction. The...

China Reports Building World’s Largest Heavy Lift Vessel...
posted on: Dec 31, 2024
Chinese officials are reporting the successful sea trials of what they are calling the world’s largest heavy lift vessel. Commentators are comparing its lift capacity to that of China’s domestically built aircraft carrier. Named Fan Zhou 8, the vessel reportedly has a capacity for over 58,000 metric tons of cargo. The massive lift deck is reported to be 11,700 square meters. They report this gives the vessel the capability to transport ultra-large components such as offshore oilfield jackets, platform modules, port machinery, components for offshore wind power, and more. Built by the Taizhou Zhonghang Shipyard for Jiangsu Fanzhou Shipping, the vessel completed five days of sea trials between December 16 and 20 in the seas east of Shanghai. The ship reportedly achieved a top speed exceeding 15 knots powered by two 8,340 kW main engines and two 1,200 kW bow thrusters. The power plant is fully redundant. During the sea...

A tale of two safeties

In the following article, Abhijith Balakrishnan, Safety Manager, DPA, Scorpio Marine Management (India) Pvt Ltd. shares two different stories, comparing ships’ practices and highlighting that safety needs trust. Asuperintendent visited two sister ships in the same port. He boarded the two vessels, over 3 days, along with the pilot. He stayed up on the bridge to observe the pilotage. On both vessels, the Master, Second Officer (2O), Helmsman, and Pilot were on the bridge. On the first vessel, the 2O was engrossed in record-keeping, meticulously documenting in the running log; hardly looking up or looking out. On the second vessel, the 2O was actively looking out and looking into the ECDIS and RADAR. He was actively seeking information and giving inputs; thus, contributing to decision-making processes, supporting the master and the pilot; and reducing the chance of making mistakes. He had filled just half a page of the running log. Now,...

posted on: Dec 31, 2024
The Greek authorities are confirming reports that a tanker laden with Russian oil collided with a cargo ship this morning, December 24, in the area of the Kafireas Strait, south of Karystos. The circumstances of the incident are unclear at this time, but the reports indicate the crews were not injured, and both ships sustained minor damage. The identity of the tanker was not supplied, but reports stated it is loaded with a cargo of over 131,000 tons of crude coming from Novorossiysk, Russia. It seems to indicate a Suezmax size tanker which is common among the so-called shadow fleet. The registry of the vessel and the nationalities of the 26 crewmembers were not reported. Greek authorities are saying the tanker was reporting that it was bound for the port of Castellón, Spain. Greece over the past few months has made efforts to disrupt ship-to-ship oil transfers that the...

Algerian shipyards to produce Chinese light frigates...
posted on: Dec 31, 2024
Algeria reportedly will produce Type 056 (F-15A) corvettes locally under a license from China. This move follows the delivery of the first vessel, El Moutassadi (hull number 940), in 2023. The vessel, built in China, marked Algeria’s initial acquisition of this advanced light frigate. Sources indicate that Algeria has placed an order for six F-15A vessels. However, after the delivery of El Moutassadi, there have been no reports of subsequent ships arriving from Chinese shipyards. Analysts suggest that this gap may have been part of a deliberate strategy to transition production to Algerian facilities, fostering domestic capabilities in naval manufacturing. The F-15A, categorized as a light frigate, is equipped with a modern suite of weapons and sensors. It features a multi-role design, capable of performing patrol, surveillance, and combat missions. With a displacement of approximately 1,800 tons, it is fitted with advanced radar systems, surface-to-air missiles, and anti-ship weaponry,...
Egypt Completes Trial Run Of New Suez Canal Channel Extension...
posted on: Dec 31, 2024
CAIRO, Dec 28 (Reuters) – Egypt said on Saturday it had successfully tested a new 10 km channel near the southern end of the Suez Canal, even as its revenue from the waterway has plunged since Yemen’s Houthi militants began attacking vessels in the Red Sea. The Suez Canal Authority said in a statement that during a trial run two ships passed through a new stretch of the canal’s two-way section without incident. Following the 2021 grounding of the container ship Ever Given that blocked the vital waterway for six days, Egypt accelerated plans to extend the second channel in the southern reaches of the canal and widen the existing channel. Its revenue from the waterway, the gateway to the shortest route between Europe and Asia, has nevertheless tumbled since Yemen’s Houthi militants began attacking ships in the Red Sea in November 2023 in what they say is solidarity with Palestinian militants in Gaza. Western Marine plans to export eight ships by 2025...
posted on: Dec 30, 2024
After a pause of five years, shipbuilder Western Marine Shipyard Ltd is planning to export eight ships to a buyer of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by next year. It was in January 2020 that the shipbuilder last exported two large bulk carriers to Indian Jindal Steel Works. It has faced a financial crunch since 2014 for a fall in the global market for shipbuilding and shipping business. The situation had worsened for the company due to conflicts among its directors and a massive amount of debt accruing with banks and financial institutions following the Covid pandemic. The shipbuilder is now hoping to make a comeback. The company signed a deal worth $7.3 million in 2023 with the UAE-based buyer, Marwan Shipping Ltd, for the construction of four landing craft vessels, two tugboats and two oil tankers. Out of the eight vessels, the shipbuilder has completed building a 69-metre-long...

Vietnam Completes Construction of Its Largest Bulk Carrier...

Vietnamese officials were on hand for the handover of the largest dry bulk carrier ever built in a domestic shipyard. The 65,000 dwt Truong Minh Dream was hailed as a key advancement and in keeping with the government’s plans to expand shipbuilding and shipping to support the growth of the country. The vessel which measures 656 feet (approximately 200 meters) is classed by Japan’s ClassNK with officials saying it signifies the vessel meets broad international standards and can operate globally. It was designed in a joint effort between Vietnam Shipbuilding Engineering JSC (VISEC) and Bluetech Finland. It is a double-bottom, single-propeller bulk carrier with a total of five cargo holds. Furthermore, it is fitted with hydraulically operated double-sided hatch covers and four cranes with a lifting capacity of 30 tons. While a fairly standard bulk carrier it is significantly larger than the vessels previously built in the country. The main engine...

Improving dockyard capacity is on the drawing board – Motshekga...

A publicly threatened action to “divorce” the SA Navy (SAN) from the manager of the naval dockyard, Armscor, is seemingly not going to happen thanks to the intervention of a “counsellor” in the form of the Defence Ministry. The “divorce” call was made in March by SAN Chief, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese at a medal parade in Simon’s Town in direct reference to the non-performance of the dockyard. The dockyard, as per Armscor, is the third line maintenance and refitting authority for the maritime service of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF). It “focusses on repairing, maintaining and supporting submarine, ships and shore-based facilities for the commercial and defence industries”. Lobese’s “divorce” call was made in the light of the dockyard not meeting its own stated commitment to the SAN and, along with budget restrictions, “severely limiting” the maritime service putting its fleet to work at sea. Proof the...

Two-day strike brings water transportation to a standstill...
posted on: Dec 29, 2024
The two-day strike by water transport workers, triggered by the murder of seven lighter ship workers in Chandpur, caused severe disruptions to the country’s supply chain and industrial production. The two-day work stoppage, which began early Friday, brought the transportation of goods from the country’s largest seaport to a standstill. Consequently, 87 cargo ships had to incur huge financial losses for remaining idle at the outer anchorage outside Chittagong port, while hundreds of lighter ships remained idle in the country’s waterways. According to data from the Bangladesh Water Transport Coordination Cell (BWTCC), 738 lighter ships carrying 1.01 million tonnes of imported goods remained stranded at 57 ports across the country. Combined with the backlog at Chattogram Port, the total volume of goods awaiting transportation was approximately 1.5 million tonnes. The murder of seven lighter vessel workers is truly a tragic incident. However, halting the transport of goods on the country’s waterways...
