As the risk grows of further escalation of the conflict over Yemen and its surrounding sea channels, Israel has begun to broaden its attacks on the Houthis to include ports and supply chains stretching back into Iran. Some commentators have urged that a complete blockade be imposed on Houthi-controlled Yemen, with the interdiction of all sea and air traffic between Iran and Yemen. Others in Israel have suggested that associated targets within Iran should also be considered in scope. If one wanted to respond rapidly to Houthi targets of opportunity, such as an attack being mounted on a merchant ship, then at present one generally needs a naval escort close by or an aircraft carrier. In an announcement by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) made in October 2024, with effect from 1 April 2025, bunker suppliers will be required to provide digital bunkering services and issue electronic bunker delivery notes (eBDNs) as the default standard. Two Greek shipping companies have been slapped with $4.5 million in fines and penalties after their vessel, the MT Kriti Ruby, was caught illegally dumping oily waste at sea and attempting to cover up the environmental crimes. Avin International Ltd. and Kriti Ruby Special Maritime Enterprises pleaded guilty to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) during port calls in Jacksonville, Florida, and Newark, New Jersey in 2022. The companies were ordered to pay a $3.375 million criminal fine plus $1.125 million in community service payments to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. In addition to the monetary penalties, both companies will serve five-year probation terms under strict environmental compliance monitoring. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) issued a safety alert regarding the discovery of counterfeit pilot ladders during a Port State Control examination at the Port of Baltimore. Marine inspectors from Sector Maryland-National Capital Region (NCR) discovered counterfeit pilot ladders during a PSC examination at the Port of Baltimore. The identification plate on the ladder contained several errors, including referencing ISO 779-1 instead of the correct standard, ISO 799-1, and lacking the ISO 799-1 designation type. Additionally, while the serial number on the ladder matched the accompanying certificate, the number of steps and the length of the ladder did not align with the specifications listed on the certificate. The plate and certificate indicated that the ladder was produced by “QINGDAO GOOD BROTHER MARINE LIFE SAVING APPLIANCE Co. LTD.,” a company that manufactures SOLAS-approved pilot ladders. The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports a flotilla of Russian ships will be arriving in the Syrian port of Tartus in the coming days with some destined for Africa. “On January 5, 2025, the Russian large landing ships Ivan Gren and Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as the dry cargo ship Sparta, are scheduled to arrive in the Syrian port.
