A cargo vessel lost its load while transiting through a deepwater route about 82 kilometers off the coast of Texel, Netherlands. The incident reportedly occurred last week when the vessel, en route from Dubai, UAE, to St. Petersburg, Russia, was traveling through a deepwater shipping lane. A Coast Guard patrol aircraft spotted damage to the vessel and the ship’s captain confirmed that cargo had been lost. Furthermore, the Coast Guard then collaborated with Rijkswaterstaat, an executive division of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The authorities are working to recover the lost items and a designated search area has been marked to prevent passing vessels from entering. The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has released the text of a proposal that has been submitted to an IMO working group. Supported by the ICS and 47 governments, it calls for an annual contribution by ships, per tonne of GHG emitted, to multi-billion-dollar International Maritime Organization (IMO) fund. Piracy at sea is less common than it used to be, according to the ICC’s International Maritime Bureau, but the risk to crewmembers remains high – particularly in hotspot regions like the Singapore Strait. In 2024, piracy levels remained about the same as in 2023 and 2022, holding steady at about 116 incidents. Out of these run-ins, 94 attacks resulted in a boarding, six ships were hijacked and three were fired upon by pirates. 13 unsuccessful attempted attacks were reported. Kidnapping remains lower than it was in the years of peak pirate activity off Somalia and Nigeria. 12 crewmembers were kidnapped last year (all in the Gulf of Guinea), a rate that was about the same as in 2023.
