Marine insurer NorthStandard has partnered with behavioural technology specialist Signol to place seafarers at the centre of fuel efficiency efforts. The two year agreement offers members discounted access to a service designed to cut fuel use by changing day to day onboard behaviours.

NorthStandard has entered a partnership with Signol to provide its members with exclusive discounts on a crew led behaviour change programme focused on fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.

Under the agreement, Signol will cover onboarding costs and offer preferential rates on its monthly software subscription. The service draws on more than six years of research into barriers crews face when trying to save fuel at sea. Using existing vessel data and processes, it aims to make fuel efficient decisions part of routine onboard duties.

Signol says its approach has helped commercial and cruise ship operators achieve consistent reductions of between 3 per cent and 8 per cent in fuel consumption and emissions.

With Signol, a seafarer will see, for example, the positive impact they can have when they shut down an under-utilised auxiliary engine, or focus on keeping the ship within trim parameters. By reinforcing the positive impact of routine, day-to-day tasks that are within the control of crew, Signol helps enhance the fuel saving culture onboard and ultimately drive decarbonisation.”

He added that the service can also recognise and reward crews when targets are met. “When goals are met, successes can be rewarded, for example by funding privileges such as upgraded gym equipment or by making donations to nominated crew charities.”
