MTN brings Amazon Leo to shipowners

MTN will distribute Amazon’s new low Earth orbit service to commercial shipping and offshore fleets worldwide. The agreement places Amazon Leo into multi-orbit maritime networks at a time when shipowners are seeking higher capacity and lower latency at sea. It signals another step in the rapid reshaping of maritime connectivity.
MTN has finalised an agreement to offer Amazon Leo as an authorised reseller for maritime deployment, initially targeting commercial shipping, yachting, offshore, and cruise and ferry operators. For shipowners and managers, the development adds another layer of choice to an increasingly complex connectivity market.
Amazon Leo is building a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit designed to provide lower latency and higher transmission capacity than traditional geostationary systems. In operational terms, that promises real-time applications, telemetry, remote operations and hybrid network architectures that can support both crew welfare and vessel performance.
“Being selected as an authorized reseller of Amazon Leo network allows us to stay at the forefront of satellite innovation as we expand our multi-network architecture,” said Steve Ritacco, Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development at MTN. “Integrating this new constellation will give us unparalleled flexibility to custom-design network solutions that offer continuous, high-performance service, including in the most challenging environments for maritime customers.”
For fleet managers balancing compliance, performance monitoring and crew expectations, latency and redundancy have become board-level concerns. Lower delay in data transmission can improve remote diagnostics and shore-based oversight, while higher throughput supports onboard Wi-Fi and operational systems simultaneously.
“This agreement with MTN will benefit maritime operations worldwide. Using our low-latency satellite network, maritime customers will gain real-time communication capabilities that enable everything from enhanced crew welfare to advanced vessel tracking, remote diagnostics, and seamless integration with shore-based operations,” said Trevor Vieweg, Amazon Leo Head of Global Business.
MTN says the addition of Amazon Leo strengthens its multi-orbit ecosystem, which already integrates 5G and LTE with high-throughput satellite and other LEO constellations. For shipowners, the result is a broader set of tools to secure resilient connectivity across global routes, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific.
