Ocean Ark is a groundbreaking fish farming vessel

The Ocean Ark is a groundbreaking fish farming vessel designed to transform offshore salmon aquaculture. Developed by Chilean company Ocean Ark Tech (OATECH), this 170-meter-long, 64-meter-wide trimaran features advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and self-cleaning copper cages, ensuring optimal fish health and low environmental impact. With a biomass capacity of up to 3,900 tonnes, it promises healthier fish at lower costs compared to traditional farming systems.

Powered by diesel-electric motors, the vessel can travel up to four knots or be towed into position, withstanding waves up to seven meters high. It features eight or four large fish cages and is crewed by 20 people. The vessel aims to reduce risks associated with coastal aquaculture, such as algae blooms and storms, by operating far offshore. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with shipyards in Turkey and China for its construction.

The Ocean Ark follows other ambitious offshore farming projects, like Norway’s Havfarm 1 and China’s Guoxin 101, reflecting a global shift toward sustainable, large-scale ocean aquaculture to meet food security needs.
