Five people dead after incident at platform

On 20th March 2024, an incident took place at the Becuna platform, managed by Perenco Oil & Gas Gabon, situated in the Simba field.

According to a social media statement by Ministry of Oil and Gas, the accident occurred during a workover operation (intervention inside wells). Seven of the twelve people on board the platform at the time of the accident were able to be evacuated. However, now the number of fatalities has gone from four to five.

Among the survivors, one injured in the leg was hospitalized in Port-Gentil. Another seriously burned person was transported to Libreville.

This tragedy, the most serious in the history of oil exploitation in our country, is a cruel reminder of the danger linked to this activity, and of the imperative to do everything possible to prevent and control industrial risks.

As informed, when the time comes, all light will be shed on the circumstances which led to this accident, and the lessons which must be learned from it.
