More oil tankers steering clear of Red Sea

At least six more oil tankers were steering clear of the southern Red Sea on Monday January 15th, reported Reuters.
Until recently it had mainly been container ships that had diverted around the Cape of Good Hope, and several trade press reports looked to counter the image being painted in the mainstream press that the Red sea was effectively closed for business. Indeed, bulk carrier and tanker traffic had been holding up rather well.
The attack on Houthi land bases late last week by Operation Prosperity Guardian, with the front-end provided mainly by the US with some support from the UK, caused tanker traffic to reconsider its strategy. The price of Brent Crude rose as a result.
Reuters counted six tankers that had altered their course since the strikes, making a total of at least 15 vessels to do so since the start of the strikes, according to ship-tracking data from LSEG and Kpler.
Chemical/oil products tanker Torm Innovation (IMO 9602722), crude oil tanker Proteus Harvonne (IMO 9923401), and crude oil tanker Alfios I (IMO 9923009) appeared to have diverted towards the Cape Of Good Hope. The tankers were travelling either to Europe or the US. Chemical/oil products tanker Pacific Julia (IMO 9772046) and chemical/oil products tanker STI Topaz (IMO 9629938) were also recorded as heading for the Cape route.
On January 12th oil products tanker Octa Lune stopped heading south in the Red Sea and turned back, heading once again through Suez and back to the Mediterranean. It is carrying a Taiwan-bound cargo of naphtha.
