Before the news of the hijacking of the Galaxy Leader, (see previous story) maritime Industry experts including ICS, BIMCO, CLIA, INTERCARGO, IMCA, OCIMF and INTERTANKO produced a recommended transit route to assist and aid passage planning for merchant vessels transiting through the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman.

The transit route consists of two “Transit Corridors” that join at the Strait of Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS)

  • The Persian Gulf to the Strait of Hormuz TSS – Persian Gulf Transit Corridor
  • The Sea of Oman to Strait of Hormuz TSS – Sea of Oman Transit Corridor

The announcement (links below) stated that use of the transit corridors might not be suitable for all vessels. Steamship Mutual said that members should carry out detailed Threat and Risk Assessments to cover all possible security scenarios when operating in this area.

In the event of any incident, suspicious activity or concern, reporting is to be made to the following:

  • UKMTO at [email protected] +44 2392 222060.
  • If under attack, contact US Naval Forces in Bahrain directly on +973 1785 3879.
