Description
The Chief Engineer is the officer in charge of the Engine Department. They are responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all systems, equipment, machinery, and compartments assigned to the Engineering Department. The Chief Engineer is also responsible for execution and documentation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) as well as the scheduling and completing of machinery surveys at routine intervals.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Operations, administration, and supervision of the Engine Department
- Familiarity with the company Safety Management System (SMS) manual
- Overall responsible for the operational readiness of all machinery, structure and equipment for safe operation of the vessel.
- Management and oversight of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS)
- Oversight of the Unloading systems and the reliable operation, maintenance and performance
- Scheduling and completion of machinery surveys and inspections
- Management and oversight of USCG Streamlined Inspection Program (SIP) for the Engine Department
- Management of ABS Nautical Systems Maintenance and Purchasing modules.
- Tracking of spare parts’ consumption and inventory. Identification and management of Critical Spare Parts
- Custody and maintenance of the following:
- Ship design and engineering plans
- Manufacturer’s instructions
- Records relating to equipment
- Copies of all regulatory correspondence
- Reports relating to the Engineering Department
- Responsible for keeping the Oil Record Book and ensuring sufficient bunkers and lube onboard for the intended voyage
- Informing the Master of any engine department maintenance, breakdown, or repair which might impact vessel operations
- Monitoring and controlling costs applicable to engineering operations
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policy
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate
- Valid U.S. DOT Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Minimum U.S. Coast Guard license as Chief Engineer with appropriate tonnage endorsement
- Endorsement of U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboatman / PSC (or approved course certificate)
- Certificate of completion for Advanced Firefighting course
- Certificate of completion for Alcohol & Drug Test Collector
- Certificate of completion for First Aid / CPR / AED course
- Minimum 5-year company (or Union) physical noting “Fit for Duty” status
