VIDEO: How Does A Ship Run Aground In The Suez Canal

John Konrad March 24, 2021

by Captain John Konrad (gCaptain) Yesterday morning an ultra-large containership ran aground and blocking ship traffic in the Suez Canal.

AIS data shows the MV Ever Given is stuck sideways towards the south end of the canal near Suez, Egypt, preventing ships from passing in either direction.

gCaptain contributors Sal Mercogliano and Mike Schuler have been busy with interviews on NPR, BBC and The NY Times. In these interviews, the question we get asked the most is… how could this happen?

While we have to wait for the official investigation and incident report (which will not be released for at least a year) to get the specific details… we filmed this short video to explain the challenges of navigating a ginormous ship like the Ever Given through the Suez Canal.
