THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF BANGLADESHI MARINERS (6)
by Mubashir Ahmed (2E) 6 March 2021
This is my 6th article under the above heading.
Respectable Sajid Hussain (15E), Commandant, Bangladesh Marine Academy writes with heavy heart, “ Our good friend A H M Mamun (15E) passed away in the early morning of 4th February, 2021.” Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Elaihe Rejeun. May his soul rest in peace, Amen. Our sympathies are with the bereaved family. He was teaching in the Liberian Maritime Training Institute (LMTI). Before this, he served with BSC, Long Lam Marine (Singapore) and MCA, UK. Late Mamun was a brilliant engineer, dedicated teacher, good manager and possessed excellent leadership qualities. According to C F Zaman (2E), he was humble, courteous and a great human being. How popular he was is evident from the fact that the condolence messages from BD Mariners are spread out on sixteen pages of my computer printouts.
Captain Imam Anwar (6N) passed away in Singapore on 7th January, 2021. May his soul rest in eternity. All our sympathies are with members of the bereaved family. Many BD mariners have paid tributes to late Imam Anwar. Captain Arup Chowdhury (10N) writes, “I remember him as a fine, outstanding officer of very high calibre. Later, he embarked on a business career as ship owner and through hard work, succeeded in building a group of companies whose business ranged from tea garden, cement factory, banking and many more fields”. He was a self made man indeed. Captain Shah Jalal (10N) writes, “ He was an exceptionally kind hearted gentleman with highest professional integrity. He always tried to help others out of the way especially BD Mariners.”
Captain F R Chowdhury (1N) writes in his article, “ SALUTE THE DEPARTED SOUL” on 10th May,2019. “ I remember late Sanaullah Chowdhury of Atlas Shipping with a lot of love, respect and admiration. He was laid to eternal rest in Dhaka on 25th April, 2019. With his sad demise, Bangladesh lost a worthy son of the Nation. He was no doubt the pioneer of private shipping in Bangladesh. In 1978, he set up Atlas Shipping Company and purchased second hand ships which were registered in Chittagong. The ships were AL-Salma, Al-Sharmeen, Al-Sayestha, Al-Sana, Al-Swamruz and Safar. These ships carried cargo to and from Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and Persian Gulf ports. Many BD Mariners served on ships of Atlas Shipping and went to the top of their careers. One example is that of Captain Saifullah. He joined Atlas Shipping as Cadet in 1978 and progressed to become Master in 1991. The spirit of late Sanaullah Chowdhury will remain alive in the minds of those connected with shipping in Bangladesh.”
