In the name of Allah, the merciful, the Marine Academy started its journey in 1962 and is still going strong. It was perhaps on 5th February 1972 that Presidential Order No.10 was gazetted establishing Bangladesh Shipping Corporation with Capt. QABM Rahman as its first Chairman & Managing Director. The Corporation has given tremendous service to the nation and is still trading around the world. These two institutions helped Bangladesh to achieve its rightful place in the maritime world.

New people are joining and old are retiring. We are also losing many of our great mariners, some of them through tragic accidents. We are also passing through a difficult time because of global corona-virus. We can understand how hard and difficult life must be for those afloat.

I am writing this e-mail after seeing 1972 pictures posted on our website. I also saw the e-mail about BMMOA initiative to help those in need. I felt very emotional and I would like to add a request to mariners – wherever you are, please observe Friday 08-May as a day for remembrance and prayer.

We lost many whom we should remember in our prayers – Gen.Osmani, Admiral M H Khan and Mayeedul Islam. They provided the support and incentive we needed. Then we lost mariners like – Capt. SA Chowdhury, Capt. Mizan, Capt. Gomez, Capt. Mozammel, Engrs. – Salahuddin, F T Rahman, Razzakul Hyder, Sanaul Haq, Samsul Alam and many more, I am sorry, I cannot remember abruptly.

There are those who are not in good health – Capt. QABM Rahman, Capt. Zaheer Mahmud, Engr. Shareef Atiq and Zafrul Alam (Singapore).

We can pray to Allah from home, ships. nearest mosque. We pray for the departed souls to rest in peace in heaven. We pray for those not in good health to recover soon. We pray for all others to remain safe.

I request that my appeal be published in bdmariners. I also request BMMOA to support 08-May as the day for prayers. I also request all others to circulate this proposal to all mariners – in every corner of the world. Let us pray on Friday 08-May-2020. Amen!

Fazlur, 1-(N).
