The name of the ‘Marine Academy (MA)’ located in Juldia, Chittagong

The name controversy of the Marine Academy Chittagong is best explained by Captain Kazi Ali Imam as follows:

Dear All,

I was following the conversation regarding the change of name of the ‘Marine Academy (MA)’ located in Juldia, Chittagong. Though i am not trained in MA but i have some good friends graduated from  the institution and happened to be their as Commandant for couple of years, thus have some

good feelings and attachment with the MA that inspired me to say few words which you may note or discard.

From the year 1966 i have heard Ex Cadets say that i am a cadet of Juldia Marine Academy and in short it was known as “Marine Academy’ and since then that was I-Con name of the great institute. Remarkably  Ex Cadets used to feel proud saying “I am a JULDIAN”. like other say i am Fauzian or Topian …

If you look at the Logo of MA you will find the name mentioned as ‘ Marine Academy’ and not Bangladesh Marine Academy (BMA). The abbreviation BMA also matches with the name “Bangladesh Military Academy” located in Bhatiary, Ctg that may raise some confusion.

My assessment regarding naming MA as BMA with reference to the inclusion of MA as BMA in the Gazette notification of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (SMRMU) has created doubts amongst many Mariners hails from MA. I understand that while preparing/making the rules and regulations for establishment of SMRMU, the persons involved in preparing the Rules were either misguided or got things done according to one’s own desire.

Secondly i noticed that Ministry of Shipping has  (MOS) agreed for the name which does not mean much on legal term.

Commented without prejudice.
Best regards,
Capt. Kazi Ali Imam

I fully support C F Zaman bhai’s idea of three pronged approach. I would further suggest that other such existing forums to come forward & join hands and start constructive dialogue with the authorities.

Kind regards

Assalam o Alaikum.

In my personal opinion, our Alumni Association and the BMMOA (representing the bulk of the Mariner’s community) must take it up strongly and appropriately with the DoS as well as the MoS. It is not enough, I presume, for our respected Commandant to carry on a dialogue alone with the DoS. A three pronged action may benefit us in retaining our identity.

Kind regards to all.
