Captain Moinuddin Ahmed has been re-elected as the Director-General of International Maritime Satellite Organization (IMSO) in their 25th assembly session. He was first elected as the Director General in November of 2014 and commenced his position in April 2015.
The International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) is the inter-governmental organization whose Primary Purpose is the oversight of certain public satellite safety and security communication services provided by mobile satellite communication systems.
IMSO also acts as the International LRIT Coordinator, appointed by IMO to ensure the operation of the international system for the Long Range Identification and Tracking of Ships (LRIT) worldwide by auditing and reviewing the performance of the system.
In 2014, Bangladesh government had nominated Captain Moin Uddin Ahmed to race in the polls of IMSO, an institution constituting of 99 international members.
The election was held during the 23rd session of the IMSO Assembly in London and Bangladesh won for the first time in IMSO’s 35 years history. It was the sixth international election of IMSO. The organization came into being in 1979 as Inmarsat and was renamed IMSO following the adoption of the IMSO Convention and Operating Agreement in 1998.
Capt Moin joined Bangladesh Navy in 1976. He obtained a Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner from South Shields Marine and Technical College in 1985 and Master of Science from World Marine University in 1989.He was a Senior Technical Officer in IMO Maritime Safety Division, before his nomination as the Director general of IMSO in 2014.
