MARITIME ADMINISTRATION-JOB OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Superintendent, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, ES-0301-00

Summary: This position is located at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Maritime Administration (MARAD), United States Department of Transportation (DOT). The USMMA is a degree granting four-year institution of higher learning. The Superintendent occupies a General position in the Senior Executive Service, and reports to the Maritime Administrator.

The primary mission of the USMMA is to educate and train individuals as highly qualified licensed merchant marine officers motivated to sail in vessels of the United States. A secondary mission is to provide a strong general and professional education which will serve as a foundation for leadership responsibilities in the maritime industry and armed forces.

This position is responsible for executive leadership and the effective and efficient operation of Academy facilities, developing and promulgating policies and programs for Midshipmen education through Department Heads and other Academy leaders; ensuring academic standards and the physical well-being of Midshipmen; conducting short and long-range planning; and establishing effective communications with all stakeholders. The incumbent is also responsible for a wide range of resource management and operational support activities.

RequirementsAs a basic requirement for entry into the Senior Executive Service (SES), you must clearly articulate and describe within your resume evidence of progressively responsibile supervisory, managerial, or professional expereince which involved management of a program or organization of significant scope and complexity. The expereince must have been sufficiently responsible to show clearly your ability to perform the duties of this position and meet the mandatory Technical Qualifications and Managerial Executive Core Qualifications.

About Maritime Administration

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is a degree granting institution fully accredited by the Middle
States Commission on Higher Education. Upon graduation, the Midshipmen (male and female) are awarded Bachelor of Science degrees, licensed as Merchant Marine Officers by the U.S. Coast Guard and commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Naval Reserve or Active Duty Military Service. Located on the North Shore of Long Island in Western Nassau County, it is one of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of maritime education and consists of 82 acres of waterfront land including a Museum, library and fitness/recreational facilities available to both faculty and staff.
