Capesize Bulk Carrier Breaks Down in Elbe River – AIS

A capesize bulk carrier blocked ship traffic in the Elbe River in Germany on Tuesday after losing power while inbound to the port of Hamburg.

According to reports the 292-meter Cape Leonidas suffered “engine damage” at about 4 a.m. (UTC) which left the ship adrift in the Elbe River for about a half hour before tugs arrived to provide assistance. An AIS recreation of the incident provided by Genscape VesselTracker is below:

AIS data as of 15:00 UTC showed the vessel’s status as “underway using engine” but with the assistance of six tugs as it continued its voyage to Hamburg.

German media reports say the disabled Cape Leonidas blocked shipping traffic on the Elbe for several hours.

The ship was sailing from Narvik, Norway with a cargo of coal.

The 180,000 dwt Cape Leonidas vessel is flagged in the Marshall Islands.
