Graduates of Bangladesh Marine Academy (BMA) have sought the prime minister’s intervention to stop alleged regularities and corruption in the marine sector and to create employment opportunity for the freshers
The former cadets of the marine academy made the demands by forming a human chain in front of the Chittagong Press Club around 10am yesterday holding placards and posters.
At the two-hour long programme, the ex-cadets alleged that many graduates were still unemployed and were reeling from frustration as there were limited job opportunities in the market.
Every year the number of unemployed cadets was going up, they said.
“Around 600 cadets of BMA have not completed their one-year long internship in sea as there was a huge supply of cadets in comparison with the demand in job markets,” alleged the protesters at the human chain.
The demonstration also alleged that the situation of the marine sector is worsening day by day as there are acute visa crises for the mariners, rampant corruption of the manning agencies, appointments through certificate forgery and falling number of local ships.
The organisers sought intervention of the prime minister to stop what they said were massive irregularities in the business.
BMA graduates have been demonstrating to press home their different demands including resolving visa crisis and creating new jobs for junior officers since 2014.
To realise their demands, they have also held a number of programmes in Dhaka and Chittagong.
