Marine Fisheries Academy
Marine Fisheries Academy is placed under the administrative control of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the command of the Academy is vested on the Principal.
More than 1,300 cadets have passed out from the Academy. Even though the Fisheries Academy was built to train officers for the sea borne fishing vessels, most of them end up in the ocean going maritime cargo vessels directly competing with Bangladesh Marine Academy cadets. Whereas BMA cadets are finding it difficult to find employment after passing out, their jobs are now being challenged by the cadets of the Fishing Academy. This was not an issue when the shipping industry took in the cadets immediately after passing out from BMA. At the present time, the issue is threatening the careers future BMA cadets.
The Fishing Academy was established in 1973 with technical assistance from the former USSR to
maintain proper and optimum management of sea fishes through developing expertise for
Marine Fisheries. It is entrusted with the training of cadets to learn skills through modern
techniques and equipment, in order to meet the challenges of the sea borne fishing industry.
Due to poor planning by the government, the marine training and job creation of the BMA cadets have been having rough times and it does not look good in the near future.
With the vast maritime boundary, the fisheries cadets should be totally engaged in the Bay of Bengal to catch fish and bring prosperity to the nation. Our vast sea boundaries should be protected by our navy and the Coast Guard with the Fishery Academy cadets actively engaged in the fishing industry. This is a vast resource and that is why this Academy was established.
The shipping sector has been corrupted immensely. Wrong planning is adding to the plight of the freshly graduating cadets of the Bangladesh Marine Academy. Fisheries cadets are adding to the dilemma in the job market. Instead of making economic gains from harvesting sea food, they are now competing directly with the BMA cadets. This is a wrongful engagement of the cadets from the fisheries Academy. Most fishing vessels are now running with scantily manned certified professionals. Bangladesh should expand her fishing fleet and the money from the fisheries department should be spent in that direction and not diverted to creating jobs in the ocean shipping.
Bangladesh Marine fisheries academy- Correct the headline…………..
