The entire city united to restore the park after Hurricane Katrina shredded its landscaping, downing many of its 600-year-old live oaks. The cleanup is transcendent, with new walking and biking paths, a great lawn for concerts, and a revival of beloved attractions, such as Story Land and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park (entry $3/person, for unlimited ride $17/person or $3/ride) that have entertained children since 1906.

A National Historic Landmark, the square attracts visitors and locals who gather to listen to street performers and buckers, have their palm read by a gypsy, browse the shops, have a chicory coffee and beignet (New Orleans famous donuts) at Café du Monde or just relax under a tree while life in the French Quarter moves around them.
