Book Review “Letters from London”
Book Review
We are proud to announce that one of our mariners is a writer. I am sure there are others too. We like to see them unfold their stories.
Engr. Shafi U Ahmed’s book “Letters from London: A selection” was launched in Dhaka. Here is what the author had to say:
“I attach herewith a report about the launching of my latest book “Letters from London: A selection” when the book was unwrapped by my friend Capt Q Rahman at the Chinese and Thai restaurant at Ramna Park on 6.04.08. There were many other mariners present there, Capt Shafi, Mr Zahedur Rahman and Mr Zakaraia Khan Majlis ex LR, Mr Sakhawat Hossain and Mr Ashraful Hossain(director) of ex BSC, my own younger brother Capt. Sirajul Islam. Beside there was also a literary gathering. The mariners were present with their wives and the jolly festivities went on from half past four to about 8 o clock in the Chaitra Shandhya in the beautiful Ramna Park. The book contains letters which were previously published in Bangladesh English Dailies and every one of them has some interesting new idea or slant and is thought provoking you can say this launching was a mini (ancient) mariner’s gathering in a public place in recent times.”
Notes: We must salute this early group of mariners who were the pioneers of this industry. The industry has grown by leaps and bounds but their contributions should be inscribed in gold letters. Even though they may feel old and tired, their experiences should be shared for the posterity. They are urged to write as much as possible for the other mariners and the graduates of the marine Academy.
